PETER JAY
NEW HAVEN CHARGERS

Coach Chris Celano on Peter Jay

“Peter was an MVP-caliber player for our team this year. He shortened the game to the point where I the final three, six or even nine outs were about as close to automatic as it gets.”

Peter Jay finished the 2013 season at 3-1 with 14 saves and a 0.26 earned run average in 34.1 innings of work for New Haven baseball. He ceded just one earned run and held opposing batters to a .115 average with a 0.47 WHIP while posting a strikeout-to-walk ratio of nearly 3-to-1 (28 strikeouts, three walks). Jay’s 14 saves mark a New Haven single-season record and came in 15 opportunities. The lone loss on his 3-1 record came via a pair of unearned tallies, while two of his wins were three-inning shutout performances in Chargers’ extra-inning victories.

Jay became even more valuable in the postseason. Between the Northeast-10 Championship and NCAA East Region Championship, the senior right-hander fired eight scoreless innings. He went 1-0 with two saves in the playoffs, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out eight batters en route to a .040 batting average against and a 0.25 WHIP. He was the Most Valuable Player of the NE-10 Championship as the Chargers claimed their first-ever conference crown.

Jay has also been integral as a leader off the mound. New Haven baseball joined forces with Team IMPACT this spring, partnering the Chargers with five-year-old Colin, who is currently in remission from a battle with leukemia. As a member of the New Haven bullpen, Jay was one of the student-athletes charged with making Colin and his younger sister Maddie feel comfortable in the dugout and around the team – all while staying ready to come out of the bullpen and close the door. It was a familiar sight around Frank Vieira Field to see Jay walking with Colin and Maddie to retrieve foul balls for the first six innings of a game, then toeing the rubber to notch the save in a New Haven victory.
